 Cortijos and Fincas Cave Houses
Town and Village Houses New Builds

Cortijos and Fincas
A cortijo is a house in the country in rural Spain – a Casa en el Campo. Traditionally constructed, using locally found materials. The thick walls are built out of stone and clay, they have small windows and ceilings of wooden beams and plaster. An ideal home, that helps to keep out the intense heat of the summer.
In this area of the Altiplano de Granada, it is still possible to find relatively inexpensive Cortijos for renovation, often they just need modernisation, a bathroom and kitchen added. They still maintain many of their original features, fireplaces with a bread oven, wooden beams and beautiful old doors. Often the remains of another generation can be found, grass made baskets and old farming equipment is often just left discarded.
On a larger scale, a Finca is a cortijo but also has a large area of land used for cultivation. In this area, Olives and Almonds cover much of the landscape.

Cave Houses

In this area of Southern Spain , the Altiplano de Granada – Castril, Huescar, Galera and Castillejar etc, caves (casas cuevas) are man-made, intentional dwelling places that have been carved out of the hard clay. They have been occupied for at least 500 years and probably much longer.
The temperature of a cave is maintained at around 19 – 20 degrees centigrade all year round with natural earth insulation. So beautifully cool in the summer when temperatures reach 40 degrees and easy to keep warm in the cold of winter when occasionally it snows.
No two caves are the same and within certain limitations, they can be built to specification. Many have high domed ceilings, others cosy nooks, alcoves and even seating carved into the walls. A cave can have all the amenities of a normal house, electricity and plumbing is easy to install. Natural light can enter via doors and windows and strategically placed lighting only adds to the effect.
It is also possible to have a frontage built on using conventional building methods this obviously adds more living accommodation but also protects the cave entrance.

We have a number of cave houses for sale, many are still in there original condition offering lots of potential to the more adventurous and for those who want to move straight in, we have many that have been totally reformed by specialist cave developers.

Town and Village Houses

Being in a rural location is not always what people want and often a town or village house is a good option. They still have many of the appealing features of a Cortijo, the thick walls, beams and traditional fireplaces, but have the convenience and security that living in a village offers. If you want to be part of the Spanish community, learn the language, partake in the local fiestas, a village home is worth considering. If you have children it is definitely a quick way for them to meet and make friends, learning the language as they play.

The bigger villages in the area all have a small supermarket, bars, bakers, butchers, doctors, schools etc. Most days in the surrounding hamlets, the sound of a beeping horn denotes the arrival of either the bread man or grocery man, there is even a bodega man who sells wine! Generally in this area of Spain the people are very welcoming and generous, offering gifts of home grown vegetables, fresh eggs and home made wine.

New Builds

If a cave or an older property is not what you are looking for, we have a number of plots available in and around the Castril and Huescar area and the smaller surrounding hamlets, all with gorgeous views of open countryside and the many Sierras in the distance. Pepe has been building new properties in this area for a number of years and can help with licenses, planning permission etc. We can help with design, working with a local architect to plan your perfect house in a perfect location!

C136 is a new house currently under construction and due for completion soon. It is a chalet style property with3 bedrooms (one en-suite), fully fitted bathroom, open plan living / dining room and kitchen (not fitted). Large terrace and garden (plot approximately 700m2). This is just one of many properties being built in the area. Please see plan below.

The benefits of buying a new build in the early stages is that more input can be made, from the choosing of floor tiles to adding additional windows. Plans can be made to your specifications, rooms added, changed etc. We can help with the complete process, it is certainly an ideal way to get the home that you really want!

The time frame for a new build from start to finish is approximately 6 to 9 months. If required, we can help find rental accommodation while you are waiting for your new property to be completed. Living close by is perfect for checking on the progress of your new house! We also have storage available, if required, while you are waiting for your new house to be completed.

We are now offering the chance to spend two nights, in the area of Castril, with free accommodation (dependent upon availability). All that we ask is that you allow us to show you around this beautiful area and to show you some property that may be of interest. We can also offer collection and return to either Granada, Almeria or Murcia airports. If you would like to take up this opportunity please call Wendy on 0034 958 742 622 or email wendy@farmhousesgranada.co.uk
